Information about Display

Here is the link I found to the display board. I'll continue to try to get the graphic that Jeanie Davis had (since it was already in more of a template form) but this is a start. http://www.portable-booths.com/showmax_trade_show_booth_exhibits/smspecs.htm

Carla's 2 Cents

1. What's a primer
2. Would it be correct to say that the example about Labor Day and swimming on page 401 is an example of Aristotle's enthymeme structure.
3.The Killingsworth & Palmer argued against "extreme condensation of expression" through methods like acronyms because it suggests a closed-discourse community that increases "the density of information that must be absorbed in a short space" (174). Because this concept was outlined in conjunction with written text, can this concept be applied to a visual text as well?

Questions

Hey all,

I'm sorry my questions are late this week...I lost track of time and realized this afternoon I hadn't sent them in. Anyway, here they are:

  1. Killingsworth and Palmer present the ways in which the Environmental Impact Statement is not usable to its intended audience. In what ways could effective visual design play a role in making these types of documents more usable?
  2. In what ways can the Environmental Impact Statement be considered ideological? How does this line up with Barton and Barton’s description of ideology. Can B&B’s solutions be applied to functional documents?
  3. How might we link Freire’s article to Barton and Barton’s ideas of inclusion and exclusion?

killingsworth questions

1. why do you think that goverment discourse is made to, if not intentionally, keep those it represents outside of its discourse community? i guess in otherwords, why do you think they would make their discourse more inaccessible to people outside of government, the people being represented?
2. can you explain in more depth the difference between instrumental and communicative action?
3. do you think the inclusion of outside commentors in the creation of EISs be a positive addition or would it simply slow down the well oiled process of the inner circle of professionals?

Freire/Killingsworth and Palmer q's

1. What are some considerations when designing visual for illiterate individuals?

2. What does Freire mean by "conscientization"? (pg. 406)

3. How might we use visuals to close the distance between audience and subject matter?
